The Biome Project
"Working with students individually, The Biome Project is able to identify personal compensatory patterns and areas hindering advancement in one’s yoga practice—both physically and mentally ..."
Wanderlust Weekly: Congrats on the growth of The Biome Project! What inspired its creation? Melissa Barber: The Biome Project started with exclusively teaching Kripalu and traditional Hatha yoga at an integrative health center (and at that point was known as Sacred Space Yoga Studio). Through the owner’s involvements in health research and training as a nutritionist, the company shifted to include nutrition consultations, while continuing to focus on the therapeutic aspects of yoga. Research consulting also became a service offered, especially in areas of integrative medicine. The company’s name changed to “The Biome Project” to emphasize creating a healthy internal and external biome or environment for students and clients, biomeproject.org.
Wanderlust Weekly: You've built a strong community following in Portland, what are some of your proudest moments? Melissa Barber: Some of The Biome Project's proudest moments have been teaching yoga to students in a group setting and individual setting. Working with students individually, The Biome Project is able to identify personal compensatory patterns and areas hindering advancement in one’s yoga practice—both physically and mentally. In a group setting, students are then able to personalize their practice and evolve to a different stage of moving/thinking/feeling. Offering the nutrition component helps to advance the yoga practice even further.
Wanderlust Weekly: Entrepreneurs are constantly evolving, what upcoming news or developments can we look forward to? Melissa Barber: The Biome Project has been working closely with Bensimon Center in NW Portland and is overseeing Bensimon Center’s transition to an integrative health center for plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine. Bensimon Center instills utmost importance in patients’ inner and outer beauty. The Biome Project is offering personalized nutrition and yoga to patients.
